EVENT DATE: Nov 09, 2013

George Vitolo

THE STORY:

My name is George Vitolo; I am endeavoring to bring greater awareness to pediatric cancers, through my love of cycling.

Unfortunately I have seen the affects of cancer amongst those in my life on more than one occasion; from the death of my close friend who recently lost her battle with lung cancer, to the joy of a family friend who recently beat cancer and more recently, the disheartening news of my neighbor whose fight has just begun.

In honor of a young cancer fighter, Jessie Rees, who touched the hearts of my wife and I; I have made a decision to ride a 100 mile mountain bike race to raise money for the creation of Jessie’s JoyJars®.  I came across the story of Jessica Rees a few years ago, while she was still in the midst of her battle with cancer.  Something about how this adorable little girl was able to reach out to other cancer patients and help them cope despite her own ongoing battle just astounded me. There was something so beautiful about the simplicity of her JoyJars®. Amidst her own fight for life, this little warrior showed the true nature of compassion, in thinking of others before herself, and started a foundation called Never Ever Give Up (aka NEGU - http://www.negu.org/); a Foundation that creates and distributes these JoyJars® to help bring some joy to others struggling with this horrible disease.  JoyJars® were created by Jessica Joy Rees during her courageous 10 month fight with two brain tumors,   they were used to spread hope, joy and love to children fighting life altering medical illnesses, are 100% free to patients and hospitals. It is my mission, to give what I can, to try and help those, who with smiles of joy and fierce determination, battle this disease.

The event will be taking place Saturday, November 9th  it is called the Twelve Hours Of Temecula.  An extreme mountain bike race held in Temecula Ca. This event will consist of a  grueling 12 hours of none stop mountain bike racing I plan to ride 100 miles.  Upon completion of the race the Open Cycle bike used in the event will auctioned off and the proceeds will be added to donations for the completion of the JoyJars®.

To better understand this cause please take a minute to watch this video: http://youtu.be/cp04Fm9c83Q If Jessie Rees found the courage and strength to give so much of herself while battling cancer and facing her own mortality, the least we should do in good health is to help support this fallen angel's legacy. 5 years ago
