Congential Heart Defect's are the MOST COMMON birth defect in the WORLD. Yet, the majority of children in the world don't have access to life-saving surgery!
And we are on a mission to make this number smaller...because we believe EVERY child deserves the gift of life, no matter what country he or she is born in.
Since 1993, the International Children's Heart Foundation (ICHF) has been taking volunteer medical teams to developing countries around the world to provide life-saving surgery to children, while training the local staff and equipping them with the necessary tools to properly care for their children on their own. Our #1 goal is to create independent and sustainable pediatric cardiac surgical programs in countries without adequate care. So far, we have operated on 7,604 children in 33 countries!
The coming year will include a new surgical program at the Roberto Reid Cabral Children's Hospital in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The goal of this trip will be to perform 15-18 open-heart surgeries on infants and children with congenital heart defects, who currently do not have an opporutnity to receive the care they need in the Dominican Republic.
Currently, there are several medications and critical supplies needed to perform these surgeries that are either not available in the Dominican Republic or are much more expensive than they are in the USA. In order to keep surgery free for the children and their families, we will ship these items from the USA to the Dominican Republic for the trip. We need your help to raise the remaining funds necessary to purchase and ship these supplies. Here are some examples of what your donation can provide:
- $ 3500 – The cost of a heart surgery to save one child’s life
- $ 1000 – The cost to ship 10 boxes of supplies to the Dominican Republic
- $ 500 – The cost of one set of perfusion supplies for one life-saving surgery
- $ 250 – The cost of one surgical patch to close a hole in a child's heart
- $ 100 – The cost of medicine for one life-saving surgery
- $ 25 – Your gift combines with others to provide life-saving surgeries
Like many developing countries, the Dominican Republic relies heavily on foreign groups for help. ICHF's goal will be to educate and train the local medical professionals at the Roberto Reid Cabral Children's Hospital so that they can become independent and self-sustaining and no longer need to rely on foreign assistance. While doing this, we will provide surgery at no cost to the children and their families.
