The Peg Miller Mizzou College Democrats Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce Xavier Lukasek as the 2017 award recipient. Xavier is a freshman studying political science and history, and currently serves as the Freshman Liaison for the Mizzou Democrats chapter. He was recently elected as the Recruitment Chair for the College Democrats of Missouri as well.
Xavier has been active in Democratic politics since he helped form a Democratic Club at his high school in Imperial, Missouri. He also served as the Development Director for the High School Democrats of Missouri. Since becoming active with the Mizzou Dems last year, he interned with the Jason Kander for Senate campaign performing many tasks on a daily basis. As part of the Mizzou Dems executive board, Xavier has been active planning events and rallies, and helped to bring the largest contingent of Mizzou Dems ever to this year’s Democrat Days in Hannibal.
Xavier is a Democrat because he believes in equality and justice for all. He says the Democratic Party is the only party looking out for college students, the LGBT community, working folks, and unions. He also believes in a legal path to citizenship, and wants to see more progress on climate change issues.
Xavier plans to put his award toward tuition, and wants eventually attend graduate school. He also plans to stay active in Democratic politics after college working on campaigns or even running for office. Xavier may also seek a career on Capitol Hill as a congressional staffer, working on policy in a think tank, or possibly working with a nonprofit organization.
This summer Xavier hopes to find a job in Columbia and volunteer with Michela Skelton’s campaign for state house in southern Boone County.

Margaret Maureen “Peg” Miller, 67, moved on to that great Democratic Party caucus in the sky on April 6, 2016. A longtime political activist, Peg served on the Boone County Democratic Central Committee for a decade. She also spent four years as a member of the Missouri Democratic Committee. In 2014, she received the Harold Riback Award for her dedication to the county party.
Peg left her mark on mid-Missouri not only though the countless hours she volunteered to help elect Democratic candidates, but also through her dedication to Mizzou College Democrats, where she mentored countless young progressives. She loved to host weekly dinners for Mizzou Democrats and is fondly remembered by the many whom she influenced and forged lasting friendships with. In 2013, the Mizzou Democrats gave her the "Young Democrat (at heart) of the Year" award.
Because of Peg's dedication to the Mizzou College Democrats, former club leaders Julia Bonham, Nate Kennedy, and Glenn Rehn established a scholarship fund in her memory at the Central Bank of Boone County. The scholarship will be awarded annually to an outstanding Mizzou Democrats member who typifies the kind of leadership and dedication to the party that Peg would have been proud of.
