My favorite part of PENCIL will always be the PENCIL Fellows. For PENCIL's 20th birthday, I would love nothing more than to increase the number of students able to participate in the PENCIL Fellows Program. I was lucky enough to manage the Fellows Program for two years, which allowed me to work with three incredible groups of people who shaped my life in different and equally important ways.
First and foremost, the PENCIL Fellows. It's hard for me to describe them as one group, but they are curious, hard-working, stubborn, resilient, and kind. Working with these students through recruitment, career readiness training, and their summer internships has allowed me to experience hundreds of firsts along with them: first resume, first interview, first suit, first rejection, first job. The Fellows Program provides students with an opportunity when they lack the resources or the network to create one for themselves.
Second, our Business Mentors. There are many ways that the private sector can look outside of itself and support the surrounding community, and donations are vital in the work that non-profits do. But the decision to hire, mentor, and build a relationship with a student takes even more: it takes time. A dedicated mentor is the backbone of a Fellow's experience.
Finally, my colleagues. It is rare to find a group of people that can both rally around a cause and make you enjoy coming to work as much. I miss working with them every day!
Please consider donating to allow more students the opportunity to be PENCIL Fellows in the future.
