*We are so close to reaching our goal to fully funding Anacostia's trip! Any funds raised over our goal will go directly towards the next class trip. Applications for our next programs will be available in late August!*
FLYTE is raising funds to send Anacotia High School, located in Southeast DC, to Cuba this summer!
Anacostia High School is located in Southeast, Washington D.C., where students receive public education within their neighborhood. The majority of the students attending Anacostia were born and raised in the area and take pride in calling Washington D.C. home.
Outside of school, students face various challenges daily. For instance, Southeast is prone to gun violence. As in many areas facing such challenges, students consider their aspirations.
“In the area in which I teach, most students’ personal goals are limited to a range of about five years. As a result of their circumstances, most students are not exposed to the possibilities outside their immediate surroundings. The main focus for students at Anacostia is to graduate, as the rate of graduation lingered at approximately 46.4% for the 20142015 school year. For many of my students, traveling abroad alongside their peers and teachers is somewhat of an unreachable dream,” says teacher Kathrine Avila, who submitted Anacostia’s application.
“This (trip) certainly has the opportunity to change their perception of their passions and aspirations. We know our students’ views of societal structure as well as personal accountability will begin to evolve. Many of the students interested in studying abroad are also those who aspire to attend college. Traveling to one of these countries could serve as a bridge toward enlightenment, which would propel our students toward continuous learning.”
The Foundation for Learning and Youth Travel Education (FLYTE) is an organization providing funding, teacher support, and itinerary and trip planning for high school students in underserved schools to travel and expand their cultural, academic, and social horizons. We aim to provide rural and smaller-scale schools with the funding to make experiential travel a possibility. FLYTE provides full scholarships to low-income students, so no student will ever be turned away based on their ability to pay.
At FLYTE we believe that the value of travel comes from understanding the human condition through the exploration and first-hand exposure to different cultures, traditions, languages, histories, and geographies. By empowering students to become global citizens and interact with people across borders and boundaries, our students will return to their communities armed with a better understanding of the world in which they live, their own role in it, and their potential to become a local leader and agent of change. We rely heavily on the funding of our supporters like you.Your donation allows us to purchase airfare, meals, and cover academic costs associated with a students’ trip, creating an invaluable opportunity to expand their global knowledge. Please consider making a donation today!
