BENEFITING: PENCILS OF PROMISE INCORPORATED
ORGANIZER: PENCILS OF PROMISE INCORPORATED
First of all, welcome to my page and thank you for checking it out! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Ginette Rodriguez and I'm currently living in beautiful Portland, OR. It is here in the Pacific NW that I have discovered my love for running. I originally hail from the east coast, specifically from New Jersey. I went to amazing public schools in New Jersey and decided to stay there for college and graduated from The College of New Jersey. I honestly believe that the amazing education I received from the schools I attended really set me up for success, both in my professional life as well as my personal life.
Access to education is in my mind on of those inalienable rights. Americans are probably thinking life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness right now, but I want to dig a bit deeper on what I believe everyone should have access to. Besides the obvious, like safe shelter, clean water to drink, nutritious food to eat, and a group of loved ones, I believe all children should have the opportunity to grow, learn, and develop into their best possible selves. One of the only ways to do this is to promote a lifelong love of learning. It is through education alone that a person can fully develop, both socially, intellectually, and even emotionally, into a well rounded global citizen. I personally have seen how important a good education can be and how it has led to what I consider a very successful life. But why should I have the opportunity of growth when so many others don't even have a school to attend?
This leads me to why I decided to pick Pencils of Promise as the organization I wanted to support this year. A few months ago, I had listened to a podcast interview of Adam Braun, the founder of this organization (feel free to check it out if you are interested http://jesslively.com/adambraun/) and quickly became interested in PoP. After further research into both the founder and the organization, I recognized that their mission and values aligned with my own. It was then that I realized that I wanted to do something to support the organization.
But why be a charity runner for PoP in the NYC Marathon? It combines my original home of the Northeast where I was able to gain the building blocks to a successfull, fulfilling life with my new found love of running that I discovered while in my new home in the Pacific Northwest. It seems fitting that I will travel back to where I had received my own education in order to support other children on their own journeys towards self discovery. I would be honored if you helped me reach my fundraising goal to support PoP. Every little bit helps! Even if you can't afford to help financially, please forward this on to raise awareness to others.
