Since 1989 Peninsula Bridge has partnered with local public and private schools to provide high potential, low income middle school youth with a 4 consecutive summer academic program that places them on equal footing with college bound students when they enter high school. Peninsula Bridge continues with their alumni in 8th grade through the Transitions program. The Transitions Program helps students and their parents cross the bridge to high school with a curriculum which addresses issues around high school choice and building a schedule to satisfy the A-G requirements. Guidance is provided for working within the system, meeting with teachers and administrators, and using available resources. If participants are interested in applying to independent schools, assistance will be provided. Students are given instruction in executive function: time management, study skills, organization, etc. They get practice in writing a research paper. Students also explore the foreign world of high school in conversation with students, some of whom they may already know as TAs from Bridge summers, and teachers, and by participating in various role plays.
Through a partnership with the community's private schools, Peninsula Bridge presents a new environment to underserved public school students that instills a sense of opportunity. The educational program consists of four consecutive summers beginning before fifth grade and provides accredited teachers for a 4:1 student to teacher/teacher assistant ratio. Our rigorous and engaging curriculum includes a focus on mathematics and language arts along with social-emotional development and cultural enrichment. By the end of eighth grade, most students complete Algebra I. Tuition, transportation, meals and supplies are provided by Peninsula Bridge, helping to ensure a sustained 95+% attendance rate. This lays the groundwork for middle school students to enter high school engaged in their studies and well-prepared for the college track.
The new academic setting in the private schools, combined with an uplifting atmosphere, create a sense of possibility for students reflected by the success of the program. Historically over 95% of Peninsula Bridge students graduate from high school on time as compared to 25% of their under resourced peers.
This comprehensive program offers a unique educational opportunity within the local community, facilitating students' aspirations and future success. Peninsula Bridge provides a transformative opportunity, which teaches underserved youth the skills to become solid high school students and ultimately college applicants.
