The People's Pantry Relief Center was born from Hurricane Sandy. However, it soon became apparent the organization needed expand to a wider mission. The struggle with food insecurity in Ocean County existed before the storm ever reached land, and is not an issue faith based charities can fight alone. It takes a community as a whole to help our community.
We now have over 6 thousand individuals from all across Ocean County registered to receive food, and every day 40 to 50 more people join this list. We have always set ourselves apart from other pantries by offering choices. Instead of receiving premade bags, each client will walk the pantry floor – designed to resemble the floor of a supermarket – filling a basket with food of their choice. Shelves remain as well stocked as possible to mirror a supermarket in the hopes of providing additional comfort. The Pantry also uses volunteers to ease the shopping process. Often those who visit us have been struggling in silence, and visiting us affords them a chance to vent to a friendly ear. All shoppers walk the floor with volunteers who are encouraged to listen without judgment. We prefer our clients leave with their dignities remaining.
However, for this bastion of hope to remain a reality we require your support. We're not supported by a church, or a government, or any big corporate charity. Our volunteers are made up of a patchwork of men and women from from many different backgrounds. We are truly by the people for the people. Unfortunately, we have costs associated with rent, utilities, and filling our shelves with food. This is where we need your help. Toms River School's Hurricane Relief Fund has been our fiscal agent since the start and they have aggreeed to support us going forward. Every dollar you donate or fundraise will go directly to putting food on our clients' tables. Your money won't go to salaries nor will it go to silly purchase. Everything raised will go towards keeping the doors open for all the food insecure families in Ocean County.
