THE STORY:

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thank you so much for visiting my page. I’m hopeful that you can join me in my support for Perkins School for the Blind by contributing whatever feels reasonable to you. If you haven’t gotten a chance to read through my story about why I’m running for Perkins, please take a look below.

The Gist.

I’m excited to say that on April 17th, 2017, I’ll be running the Boston Marathon for my new employer, Perkins School for the Blind! While I overwhelmingly feel a sense of appreciation for being only 1 of 3 to represent Perkins in the marathon, I have to take a step back and laugh at the irony of this endeavor: I’m actually a historically awful runner.

For 20 years of my life, running was a means to an end. It was simply something I had to endure in order to play lacrosse, soccer, and basketball. Asthma attacks were frequent and pain was a given. However, the experience of running changed for me when my third concussion in college meant that I couldn’t play contact sports anymore. Running could no longer be viewed as a chore because it was one of the few activities left where I could channel my inner athlete and competitive spirit. Over the course of the past 5 years, running went from being a pain to being a hobby, a release, and now more importantly, a platform to share my passion for Perkins.

As some of you know, I decided to leave Treacy & Company consulting after being inspired while working on an international expansion pro bono project at Perkins in late 2015. During my short project, I saw the challenges that children who are blind face around the world. But equally important, I saw the way that a tireless staff works daily to tackle daunting realities, one example being that 90% of children in developing countries who are blind do not receive an education.

For the first time, the pro bono project exposed me to what it means to work for and around people with disabilities. I was reminded constantly what it meant to be gracious, to recognize unintentional biases, and to incorporate language of equality. Additionally, I learned that the abnormal doesn’t have to be a spectacle, and difference doesn’t have to be divisive. It’s for all of these reasons that I decided to pursue a job at Perkins School for the Blind this past November.

For the next few months, the marathon is my opportunity to raise money for Perkins while also personally challenging myself on a mental and physical journey unlike anything else I have ever done.

The Ask.

I’d like to ask each of you to please help support Perkins and me by reaching my fundraising target of $6,000. I picked Perkins because I believe in their cause. I hope you will too! If nothing else, please feel free to wish me good luck… I know I’ll need it : )

The Cause.

The mission is: preparing children and young adults who are blind with the education, confidence, and skills they need to realize their potential. For more information on Perkins overall or on ongoing initiatives, please feel free to reach out to me or visit our website.
