BENEFITING: ALL WAYS UP FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Dec 10, 2012
There is a wonderful organization in Compton that is helping young people stay off the streets by teaching them to ride and care for horses!
Compton Jr Posse (CJP) was started about 25 years ago by Mayisha Akbar after she moved to Compton because she wanted to live in an area that reminded her of the rural setting where she grew up. Compton and rural may not seem synonymous, but it turns out that CJP operates in an area formerly known as Richland Farms, where some of the best produce in the nation was grown, due to the high quality of the soil. The area was zoned to allow large animals and many of the residents had horses.
Mayisha noticed that the neighborhood children who had no where else to go and nothing to do, would hang out at her house, many times through dinner. She realized that she was providing a safe haven for them and decided to teach them to ride horses, in exchange for them helping out on the Ranch.
The Jr Posse programs include Ranching, Riding, Education and Outreach and are based on a self-development approach to encourage young people to be good citizens and neighbors. The riding activities are used as the foundation and “carrot” to get youth involved and open to learning. They must work on the Ranch in order to earn riding time and must meet academic requirements to remain eligible for program riding activities. The riding training includes Horsemanship; Animal Husbandry – including the care, feeding, grooming, and transportation of horses; and Science – understanding equine anatomy and the psychology of horses.
CJP has also secured the help of some Olympic Equestrians who volunteer at the Ranch and provide stellar role models for the kids. Maybe one of our next Olympians will hale from Compton as an equestrian and that would be marvelous!!
Having grown up riding horses from a young age, I know that riding and caring for horses provides a foundation for many useful attributes, including self-confidence, self esteem and learning to care for other beings. These are valuable skills and the Jr. Posse Ranch provides an environment which is fun, challenging and a refuge from all of the negative activity that we hear all too frequently about Compton.
I want to help CJP raise funds to continue their wonderful programming and I need your help! As an added incentive, every dollar we raise together will be matched by The Perlman Foundation!!
Please help me by contributing any amount you are able to give. Your contribution will make such a difference (and of course is tax deductible). You need to make your donation before December 10th and I will personally deliver a check to CJP before the Christmas holiday. Shhhh..... It's a surprise!! No amount is too small so please open your heart and your wallet and give the children of Compton a gift that will last a lifetime!!
Your gifts and time spent learning about CJP is most appreciated!!
