Hennessy ADOPTED!
July 31, 2016

Hennessy is a survivor!  He had a rocky start in life, but has beaten the odds and has a pure love and joy for the life he has been given.  Hennessy  See more

THE STORY:

There are many reasons an animal gets labeled as “special needs.”  Sometimes it is due to chronic conditions such as kidney failure, diabetes, blindness, deafness, arthritis, FIV, FeLV, or having diet restrictions.  Other times it is due to a curable condition such as having heartworms, infections, ringworm, mange, or parvo.  Last, it also includes animals that require extensive medicine, surgery, or treatments to help with wounds, spinal cord injuries, bone fractures, or other traumatic injuries.  The list can go on and on, but all of these special needs can be managed or even cured.   Once they are cured, the “special needs” label may go away, but many animals will keep the label their whole life.

PPC is a true no-kill shelter, meaning we address every treatable condition that an animal may have.  We know that every animal with a special need is adoptable, and we love saving those that need extra help to be happy, healthy, and find a home.  This is why we created our Special Needs Fund.

Daisy and Delilah are 2 sisters who were given away at a local Wal-mart on a really hot day and almost had a heat stroke.  They later came down with Parvo, but we detected the symptoms early and were able to start treatment right away.

Cora and Clooney are a brother and sister pair who tested positive for Feline Leukemia.  They are perfectly healthy cats but we have to keep them separate from all of the other cats and it is very difficult finding them a home.  Most people are not willing to take on pets that will have a shortened life, but we are committed to finding them love and happiness in a home, even if their time may be limited.

Amelia was likely hit by a car and suffered a severe fracture of her front leg.  With orthopedic surgery, we were able to save the leg and she recovered beautifuly with a smile on her face the whole time!

Cera was probably thrown from a moving vehicle and the skin under her chin was degloved.  After being stitched up with time to heal, you can't even tell she ever had an injury.

Amy Poehler was saved from another shelter where she was on the list to be euthanized due to a bad fungal ear infection.  We knew with treatment, she would be cured and are thankful we were able to save this sweet girl from death.

Dwight had a spinal cord injury as a baby and was unable to use his back legs or tail at first.  With treatment, he gained almost full use of his legs but had to have his tail amputated.

Luna & Cookie came in with horrible skin infections, but with proper baths, medicine, and a good diet, both fully recovered.

Oscar was saved after his owner passed away leaving about 30 cats behind. By the time rescue came along, many of the cats had already starved to death. Oscar was the only surviving cat left on a screened in porch and couldn't even hold his head up to drink water in the beginning. He has gotten stronger with time thanks to the love of his foster mom.

Daisy is a wonderful Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix girl who has a rare condition known as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, commonly called Rubber Puppy Syndrome.  With this condition, her body does not produce enough collagen so her skin cuts and tears easily.  Cuts do not heal quickly so Daisy must be watched closely to prevent any infections.  Because of this conditon, she can never undergo surgery or be spayed.  Fortunately, Daisy has found a foster home with a family that has the same condition she does.

Champion was found crying behind our dumpster one morning with an obvious broken leg.  He needed an amputation but zipped around on his 3 legs like it was no big deal.  He was just so happy not to be in pain anymore.

Harry tested positive for heartworms.  He has now received treatment and is enjoying life heartworm free in his new home.

Sylvia was returned to the center after being in the same home for 4 years.  She came back to us in kidney failure and requires a prescription diet as well as subcutaneous fluids several times a week.  We have found a very special foster who takes care of Sylvia but we expect to be repsponsbile for all her medical needs for the rest of her life.

These are just a few of the special needs animals we currently have in our care.  Your gift will help us continue to save lives and ensure the well-being of these very special animals!
