March 09, 2012
BENEFITING: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Inc.
EVENT DATE: May 17, 2012
I first learned about Haymakers for Hope through Dave Myerson, who was helping to coach the youth lacrosse league in my town. Dave was great with the kids and I thought it was nice of him to come back to his hometown to help out. During our conversations on the field, Dave spoke about Haymakers for Hope and I thought it was a great idea. This year when I saw the email asking for volunteers to box, I decided it was time for me to learn a new sport and help out a good cause. It has been a much harder experience than I ever thought it would be. A lot of days and nights learning the sweet science!
Since starting this journey I have been thinking about cancer and how it doesn’t just affect the person who has it, but everyone around them: family, friends, and co-workers. I began to think about all the people I knew that have had Cancer. I thought about my mother and my college roommate Zach, both of whom had died from the disease, my aunt Deirdre who is battling cancer and then friends who are fighting the fight: my good friend Pete from High School, my wife’s good friend Pam, another friend whose brother has cancer and also people from the lacrosse community, John and Glen.
It really hit home in February when my youngest brother Mike called complaining about an ear ache; just a month later he was being operated on for oral cancer and is currently fighting as hard as he can against it. Time I once spent day dreaming about golf is now spent worrying about my brothers’ future. I hate this disease. Please help by coming to the matches on May 17th at the House of Blues in Boston or donate whatever you can. It will mean so much to me to have your support.
