Yesterday I completed my 8th…
Yesterday I completed my 8th Chicago marathon, running for the UPS for DownS Katie MacDonald Literacy Project. Because of your incredible generosity, you enabled me to raise $6,785 for this charity. As I say every year, I cannot thank you for your support and the well wishes you provide, which make this experience so humbling for me.

The first half of the race, again, went as I had planned, and I completed the first half with a time of 2 hours, 17 minutes. After stopping at the UPS for DownS charity tent just past mile 14, I was thrilled that my son jumped in and ran with me to mile 15. As the race turned back to the city, my daughter jumped in and also ran with me, which was a real treat. While my knees held up fine, my challenge this year began around mile 16 where my upper right thigh cramped, and the pain was excruciating (this pain has to be the closest thing to a “labor contraction” a guy can experience). I thought I might be forced to quit since I wasn’t able to move. But after re-hydrating, eating more mustard and stretching, I was able to walk, and the crowd near me cheered me on. This is why I run the marathon … to remind me of the challenges an individual with Down syndrome face and how we can help them unlock their potential. While the task may need a little extra time to be completed, it can be done, and how helpful it can be if we support them and cheer them on. And while it would be a lie if I didn’t admit that I’d like to complete with a faster time, I was thrilled that the cramps subsided, that I was able to run the last 3 miles and cross the finish line after 5 hours and 20 minutes.

And as I’ve said in the past, words cannot express my gratitude with your generosity. It makes my marathon challenge worth the fight.
