BENEFITING: KARMA RESCUE INC
EVENT DATE: Aug 12, 2015
I am writing on behalf of a very special beagle, Petunia. The paw in our logo belongs to a special beagle named Rufus who inspired a rescue to save 2350 lives to date. Karma Rescue will always have a special place in our hearts for the beagles and Petunia is one of those special ones. Petunia, a 10 year old beagle, was found under a slide in a playground off Imperial Highway by Animal Control. The reporting officer stated the dog was lethargic and looked weak. The streets are a rough place and for a 10 year old even more so. Petunia was incarcerated at Carson Animal Shelter. No one came to look for her. Whomever she knew for the last 10 years had abandoned her at the shelter. Petunia had the odds stacked against her as she was at an overwhelmed shelter and was to be euthanized at any time.
Karma Rescue saved Petunia right before her last day alive. On her freedom ride from the shelter, we noticed she was having a difficult time breathing and rushed her to our vet immediately. The vet recommended an ultrasound and quickly realized that at some point in her life, maybe quite some time ago, she was hit by a car or possibly suffered some very cruel abuse. In order for her to be in this condition she had to take an extremely hard blow to the stomach. This means for months, or possibly years, she had been living in pain. Can you imagine having only 50% lung capacity and being in constant pain and not being able to tell anyone? It was found that 50% of Petunia's stomach was now in her chest cavity and her liver, spline and intestines were gravitating toward her chest as well. She immediately underwent surgery and is now safely recovering. It is a hard battle for any dog to fight, but even harder for a 10 year old dog.
We hoped Petunia would be out of the hospital now but her little body after so many years of living in that condition is taking its toll on her and postponing her recovery. Through all of this Petunia has maintained an amazing attitude and sweet disposition and we are so grateful that we could help her. Now we need our communities help to cover the cost of the surgery and her recovery. Please find it in your heart to help Petunia so that we can continue to save more dogs just like her.
A special thanks to Access Culver City for helping Petunia heal.
