Seniors Building a “Bridge of Hope” in Santa Cruz, CA, and Jinotepe, Nicaragua - Puente de la Esperanza
Once-homeless seniors in Jinotepe, Nicaragua are trying to connect with low income seniors in Santa Cruz, California. Many people and organizations are taking part, and we need your help!
Earth Links, Inc, Three Americas, Inc., Santa Cruz Sister Cities Committee, and Global Elder Project are working together to raise funds to outfit two senior homes with computer equipment, internet connectivity, video equipment, and art supplies.
Your support, as part of the larger program for art and cultural exchange between the Santa Cruz Skilled Nursing Facility and Jinotepe Senior Center (el Hogar de Ancianos Dr. Agustín Sánchez Vigil) in Jinotepe, Nicaragua (a Sister City to Santa Cruz), will provide the tools to enable a vital, fun connection between these two groups of low income seniors.
Together with the art and music classes, computers will help these seniors to remember, recreate, and share what has been important in their lives. In both facilities, solitude and inactivity can prey on once-lively minds and bodies, and this exchange is a powerful antidote.
This fundraising drive seeks to raise $2,000 for computers, monitors, and other equipment at both facilities, which serve low income seniors. Computers and software will make possible the sharing of life stories, art, and music between the residents of the Hogar in Jinotepe and the residents of Santa Cruz Skilled Nursing Facility.
The need is sharp: in the Santa Cruz facility, they have wonderful caring staff and daily activities, but there are no up-to-date computers, network connections, or senior-friendly software, and at the home in Jinotepe, there are no computers or monitors at all for residents, no internet connections, and very little audio/visual equipment. Most residents have no income and may have been homeless before arriving at the center.
Please help us to create wonderful new memories and share the good times of the past. There is so much joy just waiting to be born and shared! Even the smallest donation is proof positive that we are committed to these seniors’ quality of life.
With the new student intern Martha, Jinotepe seniors will have regular art and music classes; stories and artwork produced by both groups will be regularly shared with each other, building a bridge between Santa Cruz seniors and those at the Jinotepe Hogar and the larger community in Jinotepe, Nicaragua. In Santa Cruz, Laurel, a current UCSC student, is working with other volunteers to engage with residents. Internet connectivity will enable the interns and residents to have regular contact with each other, to grow the collaboration between Santa Cruz and Jinotepe.
Your donations will be used to provide:
• Art supplies: watercolor and acrylic paints, paper, canvases, looms, yarns, etc.
• Computers (with webcams), monitors, internet access
• Shipping of finished art and art supplies
• Music DVDs, CDs, small musical instruments
