Dear friends: I just want to…
Dear friends:
I just want to send another huge cheer of thanks to you all for your incredibly warm hearts. I just returned from a three months stint in Nigeria, the longest time away from my family. I was blessed to spend a lot of time with some of the children orphaned by the crisis at the Stephen's center. I think one of the things that blessed me the most was seeing the children beginning to blossom, laugh and have hope again. In one of the photos I took last year with three of the girls who escaped their Boko Haram captors, I was the only one smiling as I reflected on how much they represented our hopes. The girls were solemn. This year, I was overwhelmed with joy to see them laughing, hugging me hard and sharing their dreams. Mary, and Haratu are now in school (Junior secondary school) at the Stephen's center and just asked me for books- they wanted "gateway"- the Nigerian version of a cliff notes study guide. Their plans for the distant future? one wants to become a doctor, the other a lawyer. Hanatu is busy completing her tailoring classes and we were able to donate a box of over 30 pieces of 6 yards textiles for the tailoring training class. She hopes to return to the North later in the year and start working again closer to home. We also donated several boxes of school supplies.
Apart from these materials, your donated monies were given directly as cash donations divided between the Stephen's center caring for relocated children who had lost their parents in the Boko Haram attacks and the Women's Economic Empowerment Initiative in the North, Taraba state which has been helping over 5000 widows and displaced women from various locations.
With help from the Bethel Grove Church in Ithaca, I was able to ship out and personally deliver to the Stephen's home about 35 boxes of the most fun learning books and games, and 13 kid themed bookcases designed to attract every child (animals, castles and alphabet themes bookcases). The books will equip the library currently under construction and we hope will help to restore/support the love for learning in each child's hearts.
Once again, thank you for your kindness. In the future, for tax purposes, we will channel gifts to the Stephen's home through NCC Hyattsville MD which has agreed to act as an agent in the States. Feel free to ask me for more information on past or future actions.
Have a wonderful and safe year.
