MAKE 2013 THE YEAR YOU SUPPORT HEALTH EDUCATION FOR NYC YOUTH
Most of you know I am passionate about public health, especially when it comes to kids, and especially as it relates to access to care and information. It is critical that kids receive comprehensive health education while they are in school, so that they can make informed decisions that will potentially affect the rest of their adult lives.
As an undergraduate, I founded an organization that provided comprehensive health education in local public schools that didn't have the resources to offer it themselves. When I graduated, I passed the torch to Louise Davis, and when she graduated, she felt so compelled by the work, she garnered the financial support she needed to start Peer Health Exchange, a non-profit with a similar mission. What started in just a few high schools in NYC has now grown to a national non-profit operating in 6 major cities, reaching almost 20,000 teens annually.
I am proud to continue to sit on the board of PHE as schools across the country are cutting health programs from high schools, leaving teenagers without support in navigating many difficult health related decisions at a critical juncture in their development. Students that engage in risky health behaviors at a young age are more likely to struggle in school, live in poverty, or enter the criminal justice system.
Until the close of 2013, I am hoping to get a donation a day to reach my goal of $5000. Please make 2013 your year to support ensuring health education at this critical moment in a young person’s life.
