BENEFITING: Ubuntu Pathways

THE STORY:

Jacob Lief, Founder and CEO of an internationally acclaimed nonprofit and an eminent voice within the sector, is partnering with Penn’s Center for High Impact Philanthropy (a collaboration between Wharton alumni and the School of Social Policy and Practice) to re-write the development narrative. In an 8-episode podcast series, Jacob will interview industry experts, elevating the status quo dialogue of stump speeches and sound bites, creating a platform conducive to true innovation.

To launch this initiative, we need to raise $35,000.

STORY:
In 1999 on Locust Walk, University of Pennsylvania Senior Jacob Lief held his first fundraiser for Ubuntu Education Fund, the organization he founded in South Africa that same year. The nonprofit has since grown into one of the world’s leading development models with an approach that scales up the depth rather than the breadth of its impact. Ubuntu’s cradle to career household stability, health, and educational programs ensure that 2,000 of South Africa’s most vulnerable children have everything that they need to break the cycle of poverty.

Ubuntu’s success over the past 15 years challenges philanthropists to re-think how they invest in disadvantaged communities. “Philanthropy Unfiltered,” the podcast launched in partnership with Penn's Center for High Impact Philanthropy, will feature discussions that range from sustainability and measuring impact to overhead and scale.

HOST:
Jacob Lief graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. In 2009, he was selected as an Aspen Institute Global Fellow and, in 2010, he was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader. In 2012, Jacob Lief was asked to join the Clinton Global Initiative Advisory Committee. He was named one of the world’s 101 most innovative visionaries at the Decide Now Act Summit later that year. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania.

All contributions are tax-deductible and will cover:

  • Production equipment to ensure quality sound for recording and editing
  • Web page creation and maintenance to house podcasts
  • Marketing & PR support: outreach, targeted campaigns, social media push, & promotion
  • Student research assistant to aid in creation of 8 podcast guides/scripts
  • Project manager to oversee all production of 8 podcast recordings
