THE STORY:

Last year, for my 25th birthday, my amazing friends and family showered me with gifts, love, and one of the best birthday surprise parties you could imagine. It was amazing, and just one example of how lucky I am to live the life that I live.

This year, as I turn 26, I wanted to take a step back and figure out how I might be able to help some people in this world that have not been as fortunate as I and many of the people I see everyday.

As you all know, last week was an unusual week for all of us Bostonians. We witnessed a kind of tragedy that we are not used to seeing in our part of the world. It made a big impact on us, and I couldn't help but think that there are many people in the world for whom these tragedies are daily occurrences.

Lately, I have been reading about the civil war that is currently taking place in Syria. Last month marked two years since an uprising began in Syria, isolating entire towns and neighborhoods, and exposing many Syrians to daily violence. Ordinary civilians have been forced to hide in their homes or escape the violence, and there are now nearly 1 million registered refugees and many more that are in need of humanitarian aid.

I had a chance to watch a couple FRONTLINE documentaries on the situation, which were eye-opening compared to the quick headlines we comb through on the internet. I'd recommend them if you want to find out more about what's happening (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/syria-behind-the-lines/)

The conflict in Syria is complex and deeply rooted, but there are organizations out there helping the many innocent people that are being affected. I found one organizations called "Hand in Hand for Syria" (http://www.handinhandforsyria.org.uk) and they provide medical and humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the uprising. This includes people still inside Syria as well as those who have fled to neighbouring countries.

So, to make a long story short, I would love to raise some money for my birthday this year which will be donated directly to this organization. I am hoping to raise $400, which they say is enough to give food and shelter to a family for almost two months.

I'll start out with my own $50 donation and am hoping some of you might join in to help me hit this goal. If you're in the mood, you could donate $26 in honor of my 26th birthday ;) I will collect donations until Sunday and then send straight to Hand in Hand for Syria.

Whether you jump in or not, I want to thank you all for being the amazing friends and family that you are. See you all soon!
