Photo Gear for Guatemala's Kids
Organized by: Brent Sudeck
I recently returned from a trip to Antigua, Guatemala. While there I visited a school/community center called Los Patojos. Los Patojos is run by the energetic and inspiring Juan Pablo Romero Fuentes, who was recognized by CNN as one of their Hero's of 2014. While touring this amazing school he has built with the help of the charities Just World International and Give Kids a Chance, he showed me a small closet that they are utilizing as a photography dark room. Juan Pablo explained to me that they were able to use donated equipment to create a small photography program for the kids. As part of this program they have let the kids go out to their neighborhoods and photograph what they see... The photos they developed showed the run-down condition of their neighbor's homes. The photos inspired those same neighbors to clean up their homes to make their neighborhood a better place. This small story has inspired me as a photographer to want to do more to help in any way that I can. It showed me that my passion of photography could literally change the world.
I decided right then that I would do what I can to get these kids more equipment to expand their photography program. My plan is to supply them with additional photography equipment, such as cameras, lenses, tripods, etc...to bring more kids into the photographic fold. I will be personally donating a couple of film cameras that I have collected over the years. My initial goal is to raise $2000 to get as much gear to them as I can. Any amount that I can raise over $2000 will go to expendables such as more film and print paper, and perhaps more film cameras/lenses if the donations are truly generous. 100% of your donations will go to purchasing gear and shipping to Guatemala. If you are a fellow photographer and have gear you would like to donate, I will give you contact info to work out the details. I truly appreciate your support for this worthy cause!
