BENEFITING: COMMUNITY COLLAGE-ARTS BASED PRODUCTIONS
HOURS PLEDGED: 68
We have begun a volunteer after school photography club at Jefferson High School in Denver to provide at risk teenagers the chance to learn photography. For this population we are serving this is the first time they have ever held a camera in their hands. It is an exciting project, as the students get to explore themselves through the lens by the various photo assignments that are given. The assignments center around issues they may be facing, and when they begin to use the camera, it becomes the 'window' into themselves. It is very empowering to see the students gain confidence learning to use the camera, and them actually making an image that is strong.
We currently have been using 3-35mm DSLR's. The students have to share the cameras which limit our range of projects, and then when it is time for post-production to be done, I brink in my personal laptop for them to use.
In addition to doing the after school photography club at JHS. We have instructed photography (film) and writing workshops to second grade and middle school students. Using the photographic image as a platform to become a better writer. Thishappens when the student has a personal connection to the image, which enables the student to be a more personal writer.
We are raising funds to purchase more cameras and laptops so that we can conduct digital photography workshops to more schools in the surrounding area.
