I am helping a community in the Philippines called Del Carmen to do a community needs assessment to determine how they can create resources, both economically and educationally to better serve their families and children. Del Carmen has a 68% poverty rate and an unemployment rate that is nearly 50%. We want to involve the children in the community process by giving them cameras to record their lives. The children will be trained in photography by professional photographers and then they will take pictures of their day, their lives, and their experiences. These pictures will be explained by the children and then made a part of the community needs assessment. The community will then develop a plan for growth that will include the voices of the children, though photographs. We would then like to donate the cameras and any equipment to the participating schools so that the local children can still have use when they like. The Villages in Del Carmen have nothing like this and it would be a skills- and self-esteem building experience for the children and the community.
