EVENT DATE: Jun 07, 2012
Dave and I have found our passion in hiking. We have found a deep spiritual connection to the Appalachian Trail when we first day hiked a small part of it in the Shenandoah National Park. Since that day in February 2012, we have dreamed about hiking the entire 2180 miles of the trail and in one year we have completed 311 miles.
Every time we climb a challenging mountain to a beautiful vista or complete difficult mileage, together we are reminded how fortunate we are to be physically capable of getting closer to fulfilling our dream of hiking all 2180 miles of the trail by 2018.
When we think about how fortunate we are, our thoughts also turn to those who may not be as fortunate. So many children around the world can never hope to climb a mountain or even run down the road to play with their friends because they have lost a limb/limbs to accidents or were born without them. How do we take what we CAN do and help those whose circumstances keep them being physically whole? Our answer was to get involved with a charity called A Leg To Stand On (www.ALTSO.org). For every $250 raised, an impoverished child can receive a prosthetic limb, and thus the freedom of autonomous mobility that we often take for granted and that we are so blessed to enjoy.
This February we had our first campaign and raised over $3500 when we hiked the entire length of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland...41 miles.....in 16 hours. It was grueling hiking 8 hours in the dark, but what kept us going was knowing that there were kids out there who were enduring something much more difficult day in and day out without any hope that their families would ever be able to afford a simple prosthesis that would change their life.
Here is a link to the kids who are mobile today due to the generosity of friends, family, and strangers who donated to our February Maryland Challenge fundraiser.
So we would like to appeal again with hopes that we can get more kids the prosthetic limbs they need.
This time Dave and I are headed back to Georgia (Dick's Creek Gap), and plan on hiking 90 miles to Fontana dam in North Carolina from June 7- June 13th.
Our goal again is to get enough donations to provide TEN children with prosthetic limbs and give them a life of mobility.
So help us meet our goal of $4000 for A Leg To Stand On.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us through our facebook page Pigtails & The Pirate King. We will be posting on twitter @pigtailspiratek and facebook throughout the hike.
