HELP US MAKE HEALTH A HUMAN RIGHT: PARTNERS IN HEALTH ENGAGE GRAND RAPIDS Partners in Health was established nearly 30 years ago by Dr Paul Farmer and Ophelia Dahl advocating for the health and rights of the poor. The mission of PIH is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care and values global health equity. PIH brings the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need. From Liberia to Rwanda to Haiti, PIH goes where they are most needed, caring for patients in their homes and communities, working in partnerships with local government officials and the worlds leading medical and academic institutions. PIH views it mission as both medical and moral; global health equity as a human right. PIH Engage is creating a network of volunteer teams across the country advocating the right to health be protected for all people, everywhere. We are excited to create PIH Engage Grand Rapids to educate, advocate, engage and fundraise to further this vision and this goal. For us, this work is as much about personal values as it is about healthcare. This season we are raising funds to expand access to maternal and child health care at Pleebo Health Center, which serves a population of 160,000 in Maryland County, Liberia. By funding operating costs of a new maternity ward and building strong health systems, we aim to double the health center's capacity for safe deliveries. In 2014, a deadly outbreak of Ebola struck Liberia. The outbreak wreaked havoc on the already fragile health systems, killing caregivers, shutting down facilities, and reversing years of hard-won progress in maternal and child health. Today, Liberia’s maternal mortality rate has increased to 1,072 deaths per 100,000 live births -- one of the highest in the world. When Partners In Health arrived at Pleebo Health Center in 2014, we made a promise to the community that we would bring first-class health care to the mothers and children of Liberia. Now it is time to deliver on that promise. We Will Deliver! is a call to action. Mothers cannot wait for safe births. Children cannot wait for quality care. We will deliver on our promise, and bring top-quality health care to our Liberian community.
