PIH Engage UGA is a brand new chapter of the Partners in Health Engage network. I'm a founding member and on the Executive Board as Fundraising Leader. The greater Partners in Health organization was founded by Dr. Paul Farmer, who has devoted his life to providing healthcare to those in underserved and impoverished countries.
I'm a 3rd year pre-med student at the University of Georgia, and my reason for wanting to go into the medical field is to help people. However, until I'm much more qualified, I can most efficiently help through volunteering and being involved in organizations like this.
I think that with all of our daily stressors, it is very easy to get caught up in ourselves and our problems, be it a test, project for a job, or a traffic jam that is going to impede on where WE need to go because getting to our destination might seem like the most important thing in the world at the moment. I think at certain points we need to step back and be mindful that those things, which are very important and must still be dealt with, are probably not the most important things in the world.
To me, this cause is incredibly important. People are dying due to preventable childbirth complications around the world. While I probably won't ever meet them or even know their name, helping them with this fundraiser embodies what I think is our greatest, humanizing quality: solidarity. Solidarity because we need to realize that everyone has problems that they face, and we must stand together to face them.
Please join me in supporting this much needed cause in any way you can. Thank you so much.
