PiLAB Film Workshop
Organized by: Nyasha Gutsa
Before we knew how to pave roads or filter water, we were telling stories. Storytelling has survived to this very day because of its innate relationship to the things that most define us as human beings. It’s born out of two desires, to understand and to be understood, and very often, it is the best storytellers in our society who end up becoming the most successful people in our society, regardless of their chosen path or profession. In order to connect with each other, we tell our stories and we listen to the stories that other people have to hear. Many of our most formative experiences consist of this process of telling and listening.
Things are no different, in this way at least, when you go to Africa. The children there love to tell stories. They love to connect with each other. If you have a good story, they are thrilled to hear it. The orphans who are the students at PiLAB are no exception to this rule: they are bright, creative individuals who have their own stories to tell. Every day, we are working hard to see that they have the opportunity to do so, and we have made a lot of headway. We are providing them an education, with a lot of help from donors whom we’ve met online. This started with a computer science course, and now it’s progressed past that point, to where we are now.
Our next goal is this: get these bright individuals, these orphans who want so much to learn about the world, the equipment they need to put their stories on film. We are going to guide the children as they write their own stories, turn those stories into screenplays, cast actors (other children) as the characters, record the films, edit the films, and then load the films onto YouTube. In all, we know that this experience will be an exceptional one for our children and that they will get a lot out of it, because again, we know what stories mean to these children.
Now, with our mission set, we have come to you, Crowdrise, for assistance raising $7,500. This seed money will cover the costs of five to ten GoPro Hero cameras, editing software and equipment, additional computer equipment, and actor / writer mentors who will meet with the orphans and give them some pointers. We can’t do it without your contributions. Anything that you can give will help. Thank you.
