Music for Camper Scholarships
March 23, 2016
One of the most memorable aspects of camp is the music that provides the soundtrack for the week. The summer's biggest hits blast from the dining hall, turning meals into one big party. Counselors introduce their campers to new music, giving campers a glimpse of their personality through their musical selections. Similarly, campers show up with their own musical interests, and find themselves swept away by the power of experiencing music with a group of new friends. Our opening campfire kicks off with a rockin' atmosphere courtesy of Camp Ernst's house band, Pink Splash. Guitars come out throughout the week, whether we're all singing along to traditional camp songs at the Spirit, Mind, & Body ceremony or counselors are singing their campers to sleep at the end of the day. We even end our week together in song, linking arms with each other as we tearfully sing Camp Ernst's original song, "I Do Believe". Camp and music, on their own, both have the power to bring people together, so it's no surprise that music permeates a variety of experiences at camp, enhancing the meaning of the precious time we all spend together.
Recognizing the power of music, the counselors in Pink Splash decided to get together to record an album with the intent of selling it to raise money for camper scholarships. It's an entirely acoustic album, featuring guitar, banjo, and hand-held drums. Some classic camp songs from our various ceremonies are on the album ("I Do Believe", "Amazing Grace", "Pass It On", etc.) as well as a handful of songs that are often covered by counselors at camp, or are otherwise favorites of our camp community ("Wagon Wheel", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Hallelujah", a couple Avett Brothers songs, etc.) There's even a ridiculous and fun acoustic version of "Free Bird", which has become one of Pink Splash's opening campfire standards over the past few summers. It is our absolute pleasure to share our recordings with you now.
If you are willing to donate $20 to the camper scholarship fund, we would be pleased to send you a download code with a link to a website from which you can download the album. Simply send me an email at "firstname.lastname@example.org" with the subject line "Pink Splash Unplugged" after you donate, and I will happily send you the download code & website link. Every child deserves the opportunity to experience the life-changing effects of a week at Camp Ernst, and it would be our absolute pleasure to raise enough money to help make time spent at Camp Ernst a reality for children who cannot otherwise afford it. Every dollar matters immensely, when contributing to a priceless experience such as this. Thank you so much for your willingness to support YMCA Camp Ernst, and all the people who have the opportunity to call it home -- I can't wait to sing along to our favorite songs with new faces this summer, as a result of the contributions we receive towards the camper scholarship fund.
Peace, love, & rock'n'roll.
