I'm Running with Barbara!
April 29, 2016
BENEFITING: Daraja Education Fund
EVENT DATE: May 15, 2016
Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but no means to continue their education. The vast majority of secondary schools in Kenya require substantial fees. Even indirect costs of a secondary education in Kenya are twelve to twenty times as much as the monthly income of parents in rural areas. Family responsibilities, early marriages and pregnancy, lack of gender appropriate facilities in schools, gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS, and orphanhood can, and often do, pose additional barriers to a girl's education.
To that end, Daraja Academy provides full scholarships to girls of material poverty, covering all the costs of school in addition to shelter, food, healthcare and counseling services, allowing students to focus on their academic and personal potential, without being hindered by the everyday barriers of poverty.
On Sunday, May 15th, each Daraja student will run 12 kilometeres through the villages surrounding Nanyuki, Kenya to raise funds for Daraja Academy. On the same day, Drake Pirates will race the same distance in San Francisco's Bay to Breakers, running in solidarity with Daraja students.
I will run in solidarity with Barbara. Separated by an ocean, united by a cause.
A litte bit about Barbara:
Barbara hails from the nearby town of Nanyuki. After the post-election violence in 2007-08, her father deserted the family. Since then, Barbara has been living with her brother and mother, who sells charcoal for income. Her primary school head teacher saw much potential in Barbara and her high academic performance so she paid for Barbara’s school fees since her mother couldn’t afford them. Because of this, secondary school was not a possible reality for Barbara until her interview to attend Daraja. At Daraja, Barbara has infectious self-confidence and is extremely well spoken. She loves to act in talent shows on campus and can be found singing while she does her laundry on Saturdays. In her spare time, Barbara reads novels and shares stories with her friends. Her favorite aspect of Daraja is the kind environment and the unity she shares with her Daraja sisters. For her community service during school breaks, Barbara cares for children at an orphanage.
Please support these Daraja girls as they race for their education in #RaceforDaraja2016.
When you donate, you make Barbara's race a little easier. Thank you for your support.
