Pisey I wrote -
While on a job training, I browsed throught Barnes and Noble Bookstore with a fellow co-worker and found a book titled "The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine" very intriguing. And so I walked out of the store with that book and I finished the book in two days (let me tell you that I'm no book reader so this was a personal record to read a book that fast) swollen eyes (crying in about every pages that I flipped through) and all because it has touched my heart and open my eyes how slavery still exist in the 21st century. It made me realize the rumors and gossip about prostitution in Cambodia is actually true (I am Cambodian). Young women and children (as young as 5 years old) are being sold and forced into prostitution. I discovered the Somaly Mam Foundation through this book.
I thought about how I can help and what can I do? The non-profit organization is not locally in California, but many miles away in New York. I signed up to be contacted and finally Ms. Amy Merrill, one of the personnel at Somaly Mam Foundation sent me an email. All she asked for me to do is bring awareness about this "GLOBAL CRISIS" in my community. I decided that since I participate in many marathon and half marathon, I will make a shirt to wear in all my races and represent the Somaly Mam Foundation.
Many more emails exchange and I decided that if I get picked from the lottery for the New York Marathon 2011, I will fundraise for this great cause, to end human trafficking. As you can see I will be participating in the ING New York Marathon this year and bring awareness for the Somaly Mam Foundation. What better way to represent and fundraise for them, than New York since their office is in New York.
The Somaly Mam Foundation was started in 2007. The money raised will help them to rescue more young women and children, provide shelters, medical and psychological care for the victims all across Southeast Asia.
If you have not been touched by this story to donate money (all donations are tax deductible) or time (contact me about how you can help) please check their website at www.somaly.org for futher information about this non-profit organization and decide what you can do to help one victim at a time from the heartless pimp and brothel.
