BENEFITING: Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh
EVENT DATE: May 06, 2016
During a game against the Kansas City Chiefs in October, 2015 (October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month), Will brought attention to the issue of domestic violence and honored his mother by wearing a pair of purple cleats, the awareness color of domestic violence. He was fined $5,787 by the NFL for violating the league dress code and asked that his fine go to support a domestic violence shelter.
When Pittsburgh Steeler William Gay was only eight years old, he lost his beloved mother to domestic violence. She was fatally shot three times by his stepfather before he also killed himself. To keep her memory alive and to help other victims and survivors of domestic violence, Will has been a tireless advocate for the issue of domestic violence. From visiting the residents and their children at Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh (WC&S) to lending his voice on a national scale by becoming the spokesperson for the RUSafe App, Will is committed to bringing broad awareness to this devastating issue.
Because of Will's generous spirit and commitment to ending domestic violence, he has donated that pair of purple cleats to Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh to be raffled. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit WC&S' programs and services designed to keep women and their children safe. Tickets are 1 for $20 or 3 for $50. Tickets will be sent to all participants in the mail and the winner will be drawn at WC&S' Celebrating Survivors event on Friday, May 6, 2016. Please call 412-687-8017 ext. 337 with questions.
