BENEFITING: Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
ORGANIZER: Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
EVENT DATE: May 04, 2014
Food isn't a luxury. Nutrition shouldn't be, either.
We've heard it so many times that it has ceased to hold meaning, but you are what you eat. If our communities can get better nutrition, our communities will experience better health.
That's where Greater Pittsburgh COmmunity Food Bank comes in. With a focus on providing healthy food to people in need, GPCFB plays a key role in improving public health. Every dollar raised GROWS into FIVE dollars of food and services!
Please support the food bank's efforts by supporting my run in their support. I'm hoping to earn $100 for each mile I run. Please help me meet this goal.
Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank opened in 1980 in response to the closing of Pittsburgh’s steel mills, which left 80,000 people unemployed and unable to provide for themselves and their families. Today, though the causes of food insecurity are different, our work to feed the hungry in southwestern Pennsylvania through a network of partners and to mobilize our region to end hunger remains much the same. Serving 11 counties, we distribute over 27 million pounds of food to people in need each year. We distribute through a network of 400+ member agencies, including food pantries, homeless shelters, and senior centers.
With your help we can continue to:
Distribute: 27,014,117 pounds of food and other essential items to low-income families.
Complete: 186 Produce to People distributions, serving 16 distressed neighborhoods & 198,399 people, distributing nearly 3.7 million pounds of food and non-food products.
Expand: our SFSP outreach to Somerset and Butler Counties and continue outreach in Fayette, Beaver, Lawrence, and Greene Counties, serving nearly 10,000 children.
Collect: 475,040 pounds of food and non-food products, valued at $802,817, through community food drives.
Engage: 13,333 volunteers, for a total of 70,043 service hours, helping us repackage and distribute food for people in need.
