Simon OPOKA's Fundraiser:

Propagate 1 million shea butter trees in one year

Simon's Photo

During the two decade war of Lord's Resistance Army led by Joseph Kony in Northern Uganda, Internally Displaced Persons (IDP)depleted natural forests and indigenous trees for fuel. Upon the IDPs' return to their homes in 2008, they continued to burn charcoal to supply the emerging 'urban' settlements in the former IDP Camps.

Shea (butter) tree makes one of the best charcoal properties of slow burning and less smoky. This is has endangered the tree. The forests and community woodlots are being replenished with commercial timber tree species, mostly, pine and Eucalyptus. Indigenous tree species that are more important in restoring the ecosystem are not getting support in the reafforestation of the community woodland.

I am an agriculturalist in Northern Uganda who is working with the recovering community. By supporting my personal challenge to micro-propagation 1 million Shea trees for free distribution, training and planting you will be contributing to;
1 - Reducing Carbon Footprint to combat climate change
2 - Fighting poverty, Shea trees is source of medicinal butter oil of high commercial value. The farmers would earn income from carbon credit.
3 - contribute to fighting hunger. The Shea tree fruit is edible and nutrition.
4 - Utimately, when the production of butter is optimal, we hope to see a soap making small scale industry.
5 - Are we not all happy when we set goals, make commitments and achieve it.
