I want every child to know that they have the power to do great things in life. If I reach my goal I want to give every child in our town’s elementary school an apple tree sprout. Not only to encourage the children to help the environment by planting trees, but I want them to know that in the grand scheme of things, they matter.
My name is Katy and I’m from a VERY small town in Illinois. I have lived here all my life. I love that some of my neighbors get around in a horse and buggy. However, growing up in such a small place has a way of making an individual feel like their impact on the world is pretty limited.
Six years ago my life changed forever with the birth of my daughter Charlotte. She was premature and had to spend her first days in the NICU. Here she was, this tiny baby, and she became my world. Like all parents, I just want to give my child a great life. More than that, I want her to know that her dreams are valid and important.
For me, the realization that I could make a difference came with my acceptance letter to a private university. Not just any school, but the university I had dreamed of attending forever. I never thought I would get in. I never thought I would be good enough or smart enough. Turns out, I AM! What’s the problem here? Private = Expensive!
Here I am a heartbeat away from graduating with a Bachelors degree from my dream school and my funds have dried up. As a single mother with a child in school, I find that there never seems to be enough. I had to resign from my job last year due to a botched surgery. I now make pizzas in a local convenience store. We have landed in the all-too-common shoes of many people today. I want to accomplish much more. I want my life to be about something more. I want to gift every child in our town’s elementary school an apple tree. I want them to take pride in helping something grow. They need to see that their actions do have an impact. No matter how small they might feel at times, their dreams are important. Even the biggest trees come from a tiny seed. Even the children in this tiny town, have the power to make big things happen.
