Hello, my name is Patrick Muvunga. I’m co-founder of a learning space in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda for refugees and youth called Opportunigee. If you see a building constructed of plastic bottles, that’s us! We’re a sort of collective of artists and poets. Youth come here with ideas, and we help them make those ideas real.
This time, we have the idea that we’re hoping people everywhere will help us make real. We want to create a playground constructed of discarded car tires at one of Nakivale’s water points.
People – especially kids – are bored waiting to fill their water jugs every day. So, we will build them a playground where they can sit in some shade, talk to each other and play games while they wait.
We’ve already build a building out of plastic bottles, so we think we can make a playground out of tires. We’re not sure what it will look like yet, but we’re planning to build a big tree out of tire pieces. Hopefully we receive the support we need to make it happen.
