Play it Forward - YMCA Haiti Soccer Camp 2014
Organized by: Joseph Latessa
EVENT DATE Jul 01, 2014
4 years after the earthquake that left over 2 million people homeless, Haiti continues it's recovery. Over 150,00 people are still in displacement camps and 1 in 5 kids have no access to primary school education.
The YMCA d'Haiti Soccer Camp is the backbone for the Haitian Y in connecting with youth from communities across Haiti. The camp started in the early 2000's and has been supported by the YMCA of Ridgewood, NJ since 2008. The camp has swelled in size from 70 campers in 2008, to 200 campers in 2013. This year we hope to bring over 250 campers to camp in the northern town of Caracol.
While there was significant economical hardship before the earthquake, things were made a lot worse after it. Millions lost their homes, business and loved ones. The Y fulfills its promise of serving and strengthening community by connecting with teens across the country providing hope and an escape from some of the challenges in their day-to-day lives - a lifesaver for some.
YMCA Soccer camp is the highlight of the year for many kids. Not only do we have an opportunity to teach kids about the core values of respect, responsibility, caring and honesty they also learn about teamwork and sportsmanship. And they get 3 meals a day and shelter. Basic amenities we take for granted every day.
Please help us stand shoulder to shoulder with our international neighbors as they rebuild their countries, their lives and their communities.
