Screening can save lives.
I'm raising money to support Play Smart, a free heart screening program for kids at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. Our goal is to screen kids to evaluate for asymptomatic cardiac risk factors for sudden death, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome, and high blood pressure.
We started this program in June 2012 in response to the tragic experiences of multiple families in our own communities who have lost a child while participating in school athletics. Every week, children die from undiagnosed cardiac conditions that we can potentially identify in our free screenings.
The evaluation includes a short questionnaire, a blood pressure measurement, an electrocardiogram (ECG), and a brief ultrasound of the heart if appropriate. The screening is noninvasive, painless, and takes ten minutes.
I am running the Seattle Marathon this November in memory of the kids who we have lost and in honor of the kids who we hope to screen and keep safe. With your support, we will expand our program to screen more kids at no cost to their families.
