Ways Out Of Poverty Foundation assists underprivileged children and young adults in Haiti through education, basic healthcare and nutritional needs. It has partnered with Food For The Poor to serve the community of Onaville.
Founder of Ways Out Of Poverty Foundation, I have been a member of a medical team that conducts mobile clinics in different poor communities in Haiti, including Onaville, which was chosen to receive our service last year (2015).
After the 2010 earthquake, the government opened the area of Onaville to people who were displaced. As a result, thousands of families have migrated to the area, causing a significant increase in the population. Except for a slowly developing infrastructure, resources and economic opportunities in Onaville remain largely unchanged. Many of the newcomers lack the skills to support themselves and their families. This has greatly increased the poverty rate and need for immediate health care in the area. As many other health care professionals, I was struck to see that there was only one private health care center in the area which only operates once a week and which the patients do not visit because of their inability to pay for costly treatments.
As a first step toward providing affordable medical services to the residents, I identified and purchased a parcel of land in Onaville. I paid the taxes and constructed a wall and a gate around the property using my own source of funds.
Food for the Poor has joined me in my quest to build this clinic. This organization began working to help the poor of Haiti in 1986. Today, the organization is one of the country’s largest providers of emergency relief and sustainable projects. Our goal is to construct a permanent health clinic in Onaville, Haiti to care for the impoverished residents and help decrease the incidence of many diseases that are prevalent in the community. The new clinic will serve as a first response for health care resources to Onaville and surrounding communities. The clinic will offer basic medical care to people of all ages through early identification and assessment. People will receive immunizations, routine checkups, treatment for acute and chronic medical conditions, and dental care. Preventative treatment will be prescribed for patients to manage their medical conditions. The clinic will also offer basic education and training in hygiene care to prevent diseases such as typhoid, cholera, hepatitis A, and STDs.
Once construction is completed, the clinic will become operational Monday through Friday, and depending on need, may open on Saturdays for urgent care. It is anticipated that this new clinic will encourage residents to be more proactive about seeking medical assistance at the onset of a problem. The Bethesda Community Project will construct a 3,315.28 sq. ft. non air conditioned building equipped with a pharmacy, lab room, reception area, emergency triage, three consultation rooms, two examination rooms, classroom, administrative office with a bathroom, two additional bathrooms, wall fan and an outdoor waiting area. The structure will be built on concrete blocks with a flat concrete rooftop to support a possible future second floor.
The basic construction will cost $160,000.00. With the help of friends and family, we have already raised close to $100,000.00 and we need your help raising the remaining $ 60,000.00. Your contributions will help make a difference in the lives of the people in Onaville. If we stand together, we will fulfill the dream to bring lifesaving healthcare to the people of Onaville.
