Organized by: Jana's Friends

EVENT DATE Oct 02, 2014
After spending all day waiting in court on Thursday, 10/2, Jana's case has been moved to January 26th, for a 1pm trial.
Jana says: "I plan to share more information about this whole experience once it's all over, (from the arrest, to the culture within the police station, to finding representation, to the trial itself,) because it's been a pretty eye-opening, informative and emotional experience, but for now I just want to say again how incredibly thankful and overwhelmed I've been by your support.
Below is an article about my lawyer that was published in the Tribune a few years ago. He is excellent and confident, and it's because of you all that I have him in my corner.
Thank you, thank you!

This crowd-funding site has been organized to help Jana Ross offset the legal fees she's facing for her court date on October 2nd. Jana witnessed police officers harassing a young man of color and recorded the interaction with her phone, much to the chagrin of the officers. In Jana's effort to do the right thing and stick up for an innocent bystander, the cops decided to teach her a lesson and charged her with a Class A Misdemeanor for Obstructing and Resisting an Officer. She must now deal with a scary, difficult, and costly legal situation – the maximum sentence for this charge is $2,500 fine and one year in jail. Jana has managed to secure the legal services of a renowned Chicago lawyer, who took the case because he is interested from a civil liberties perspective. While the attorney has very kindly reduced his fee, it will still cost Jana $1,500, which must be paid very soon, and he does not take credit cards or offer any long-term payment plans.
It's our hope that together we can help ease the financial burden during this stressful time - even $10 would help. Friends are helping out with this site because we can't quite imagine how awful and uncomfortable it can be to ask for help, especially financial help, and especially for someone as independent and humble as our dear Jana. We would like to help, and it’s our feeling that many in Jana’s circle of friends and family might also like to contribute. Please know that you are under absolutely no pressure – and please feel free to give (or not) anonymously (or not) in whatever way makes sense for you. It takes a village, every little bit helps, many hands make light work….all that good stuff.
If you do decide to get involved, please provide your address privately so that it can be passed along to Jana...she'd like to say thank you.
Love and thanks –
