I am a lupus patient since 12 years old. Now I am 35. I have flare up on and off throughout these 23 years. What is Lupus? Lupus (sometimes generically referred to as SLE, systemic lupus erythematosus) is an autoimmune disease, one that takes on several forms and can affect any part of the body, but is most commonly attacks the skin, joints, the heart, lungs, blood, kidneys and brain. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ipTaiWS5bzs"></iframe> Autoimmune diseases are characterized by a malfunction of the immune system one in which the immune system cannot distinguish between the body's own cells and tissues and that of foreign matter, like viruses. Rather than simply producing antibodies to attack antigens (viruses, bacteria and similar foreign matter), the immune system creates auto-antibodies that attack the immune system itself. When this happens, victims can suffer inflammation (the primary feature of lupus), pain, and tissue damage. Inflammation in and of itself can cause pain, heat, redness, swelling and loss of function, either internally (certain organs) or externally (primarily the skin) or both. For my condition, it is affecting my platelets and kidneys. I get exhausted easily and I can't be under sun for long hours. As compared to healthy people, I get exhausted easily. Working long hours is extremely tough for me as I get tired easily. Most of the time, I am over exhausted. By right this condition to be standardised, I can't work under stress at all. But staying in Singapore, no job is not an option. Despite so, I have never give up. Money is still the main issue for my medication and family finance. I am still work despite my health condition. There was a point of time I could not find any job but now, I am in a teaching line. Working as an allied teacher, is very tiring but rewarding. It is my dream job and I always hope I can give back to the society. I am very grateful throughout my life, I met alot of people who have been helping and taking care of me. My parents, at the age of 60, still struggling and working as my income is not substantial for them to retire and enjoy their old years at home. I hope there is an enough set aside amount for my medical. Even when I am not working, my parents will not have to worry for my survival. I will not go for a 'no' working life. This will not be beneficial for my health but I hope I don't have to worry for money for my health in order to stay alive. Currently, my body is showing repelling symptoms to heavy dosage of steriods. But again, it is the only medication for me to stay alive. I hope in the long run, I can slow down my pace. My parents won't have to worry for my medical fees, or taking care of me. Please help me in anyway if possible.
