Olaf came into my life on a snow filled February night. He was scruffy all over, and emaciated so badly I could see his hip bones protruding. I didn't have any room to foster him because of my own cats, and I feared bringing him to a shelter in that condition might get him euthanized, so my sister volunteered to foster him. We set to the task of getting him onto a feeding schedule. He started putting on the weight gradually, but I noticed he struggled with dry food so I fed him mostly wet food suspecting he might have a bad tooth. He struggled if I tried to look in his mouth, so I decided I would leave that to the vet.
This past Monday I took him to the Abington Animal Hospital to get all his vaccinations and an FIV/FELV test, as well as have his teeth checked so I could find him a good home. The good news was that he is FIV/FELV negative, and with two months of good food and love that he was up to a healthy weight of 9 pounds,( you can see the dramatic change in the pictures I have posted) the not so good news is that he has advanced dental disease and most all of his back teeth will need to be pulled. The vet suggested an antibiotic injection to combat the gum infection, which I did, and will have a follow up in two weeks for another one.She said with the condition his teeth are in that he's definitely in pain, and that he needs the surgery asap, which I cannot afford.
I was told dental can range anywhere from 400 and up, but that he would most likely be on the high end close to 800-1000 because of the amount of teeth he needs pulled, they also factor in prescribing pain meds, and antibiotics, or if they have complications and if he needs to stay over night.
Even with all he's been through, and the amount of pain he must be in, he has never done anything besides climb into your lap purring and beg for warm hugs. He's such a happy, loving, and grateful cat. I want to give Olaf a chance at life, this poor little guy has been through so much, and he deserves to live. Please help me save Olaf !
