THE STORY:

Please support our efforts to get Sam the reconstructive surgery he needs and deserves.

Sam is the ambassador of Look At Us, Haiti on the isolated Island of La Gonave.  His cheerful optimism, compassion and knowledge of his community allow us to effectively provide life-changing surgeries and hearing aids to some of the most vulnerable children on earth.  Our successes would not be possible without Sam.

Located 20 miles of the coast of Haiti, La Gonave does not have the services or aid that can be found on the mainland.  If Haiti is the country the world forgot, La Gonave is the Island Haiti forgot.  Its 130,000 residents are served by one doctor and one small hospital.  There is no modern plumbing system and no electricity for most of the residences. However, its people are proud and resilient.  The hills are filled with the sound of music and laughter at night.  The children have the biggest smiles, although materially they have literally nothing. Sam is a highly regarded leader in this community.

Sam runs a happy, beautiful school with 57 students.  In it, they care for the impoverished youth.  They offer a meal program and a nurturing environment.  The kids cannot wait to attend each day!  They also run a Saturday program so the children can have at least one good meal 6 days of the week.  Sam finds children in the community who need care, takes them to the hospital and works with other aid organizations to provide medical assistence.  He transports them and their families to the mainland for surgeries.  In summary, Sam does anything necessary for everyone on La Gonave, never asking for anything in return. He continually gives back to others. He is one of the most noble, moral and wise people I have ever met. He understands what it is like to be impoverished.  He understands what it is like to be hungry. Most importantly, he understands what it’s like to live with an injury and not have the ability to receive care.

In 1998, Sam had a terrible accident that severely burned the left side of his head.  He lost most of his ear and suffers from severe scaring.  To cover the damage, and to not frighten the children, he wears a beanie.  Wearing this beanie in the tropics is not comfortable and causes painful eczema, headaches and irritating skin rashes.  He has suffered from this condition for the last 18 years with no hope of finding relief.  With our support, relief will come soon.

Sam recently visited the U.S. to speak at a conference for Look At Us, discussing the craniofacial needs of children on La Gonave. While here, he was able to create a relationship with Crane Country Day School, which will hopefully become a sister school to his this fall. In addition, he met with a friend regarding permaculture techniques that will benefit La Gonave far into the future.  Unbeknownst to Sam, Look At Us made an appointment for him to meet with Dr. John Reinisch, one of the world’s most renowned reconstructive surgeons, who is also part of Look At Us Alliance.  Dr. Reinisch was the first surgeon Sam had ever had the opportunity to meet.  Dr. Reinisch will be able to perform a reconstructive hair/scalp transplant that will be completed in two procedures over a period of 4 months. The hair will cover the severe scaring and allow Sam to appear “normal” without a beanie!

Although Sam is older than our typical recipient, he has sacrificed so much and also given so much, that we feel he should be given the gift of a transformative surgery, too.  In a typical Sam response, he did not want to use funds that might help children on the island.  We reached a compromise with him.  Look At Us, supporters of his school and others who love Sam, are raising the necessary funds.  A portion of these dollars will be used to provide life saving surgeries and give the miracle of hearing to children on La Gonave.

Please help make Sam’s dream and his dream for others come true. Dr. Reinisch has generously donated his fee, but there are many expenses, including the operating room, hospital, anestheseologist and travel expenses to and from Haiti.  Our goal is to raise $25,000 for his cause.  Anything helps!

Join our alliance and become a part of a hub of inspiration, empowerment and hope. Together we CAN Create a Broader Community of Care. If there is always +Plus Another, paying it forward never ends!
