For years, we’ve dreamed of a permanent home for Podcasts for Peace.
We started out renting a house for only a year before the owner moved back in. After that, we rented a small one-room space for three years. We often had to tell the younger kids to come back later when we had another class in session, or took the chairs and books outside when there wasn’t enough room.
Then last year Mika and James got married. At their wedding, instead of a gift registry, they asked their friends and family to help make a down payment on a house for Podcasts.
It just so happened that one of the families in the neighborhood was moving out. Knowing our situation, they were willing to let us purchase the house in three installments. We made the first payment in July with the wedding donations and moved in. Two generous grants enabled us to make the second payment in December.
Now with one last payment of $7000 (due at the end of May), Podcasts will have a permanent home in the community!
At the new location, we have room for multiple activities to happen at once. During the busiest part of the day, we might have sewing class for youth and adults in the back, young children playing and reading in thearea infantil, dance class in the front, a few kids doing research in the side room, and a meeting in the office.
We are very fortunate to have a matching donor. Our friend Jim Forbes will match each donation up to a total of $5,000!
If we exceed our goal for the house payment, we will be able to repair the broken floor and make other long-term investments in the house. The money would also help us register Podcasts as a non-profit organization so we can access a wider variety of funding sources.
Podcasts for Peace is a space where young people feel a sense of belonging and are given opportunities to discover their full potential. Thank you for joining us!
**Thank you to Jim Forbes and our fiscal sponsor, Reader to Reader. If you would like to make a donation by check, please e-mail PodcastsForPeace@gmail.com.
