PODEMOS began as a student initiative in the summer of 2008. It was pioneered by four students from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and a law student from the Moritz College of Law. Following a community needs assessment emphasizing epidemiology and the availability of medical resources, PODEMOS identified three medically underserved communities with which to build a sustainable partnership. This partnership envisioned semi-annual trips of physicians and students to the communities identified. By committing to a small group of communities, PODEMOS is able to provide long-term, quality health care for both acute and chronic conditions.
Since 2008, PODEMOS has expanded to include pharmacy, nursing, and dental students. PODEMOS continues to provide semiannual clinical service trips that provide health care for hundreds of Hondurans in underserved communities. In addition, PODEMOS employs a part time community health worker that oversees monitoring and care of pregnant women and patients with chronic conditions during the time PODEMOS team members are not in country.
This fundraiser will help raise money for our summer 2016 brigade. The money will be used to pay for medical supplies, advanced medical care for patients who require it, and various other things that make the trip possible (such as transportation). Your support will directly enable sustainable, quality health care for underserved populations in Honduras.
