Recitation of Rock Me Mercy by Yusef Komunyakaa
April 09, 2016
Hello poetry lovers!
I have taken on the challenge to memorize one poem for each week in April and to share it with the world. The proceeds of this fundraiser benefit the worthy cause of poetry education, performane and publishing. Please support me by making donations to your favorite literary nonprofit, Imagine Dallas Literary Arts.
How it works
On April 9, 16, 23, and 30, I'll update my own personal Crowdrise page, sharing one poem I've memorized that week, with a video. Our team will also share what we've memorized at The Wild Detectives bookstore and bar on Saturday, April 30 at 3PM.
I will memorize the following poems
Rock Me, Mercy by Yusef Komunyakaa
Solitude by Lia Purpura
One Art by Elizabeth Bishop
Think of the Unsatisfied Ones by Gottfried Benn
When you sponsor a participant in this challenge, your gift to Imagine Dallas sends tutors into schools to deliver vibrant, effective tutorials; promotes readings by poets enthusiastically committed to a community of interpretation; and supports the publication of important, beautiful, extravagant literary writing. Thank you for your generous help! This April, don't just read poetry. Work it into the rhythm of your daily life. Your chair swivels left, that's a line. It swivels right and that's a rhyme. Poetry discovers the richness of our existence in the world that we are always forgetting. Memorize the words that stir you, not that they will give you constant light--leave that to the fluorescent overheads--but so that the truth in the words can well up in you when you need it.
