Poetry with a Purpose

“…It has always been true that poetry can break isolation, show us to ourselves when we are outlawed or made invisible, remind us of beauty where no beauty seemed possible and remind us of kinship where all is represented as separation.” -- Adrienne Rich
“Poetry is an act of peace.” – Pablo Neruda
Poetry with a Purpose spreads light and love through the poetic word by bringing poetry and writing programs in to Women’s Shelters, Recovery Centers, Youth Outreach Centers, etc.
Professional Poets and Teaching Artists will lead free creative writing workshops in the shelters so participants can express the stories of their hearts and create their own poetry. Our Poets will deliver uplifting poetry readings that will nourish, edify and infuse a bit of beauty into the atmosphere. The poetry created from this program will be compiled into a brave book of poems which we will professionally print and publish to pass on to other shelters and community centers and out in the community at large creating a ripple effect of healing inspiration. Lastly, at the end of our weeks at each shelter location our poets will gift each participant with a unique poem that has been written specifically for them and leave them with a potent poetic blessing.
Eat Your Poem's 'Poetry with a Purpose' has been making an impact at Women in Distress shelter in Broward County and has been providing inspiring programming since April of 2015. We have interest and requests from other South Florida organizations and from a shelter in North Carolina. Your support will help us contin
