THE STORY:

I met Pete Ampudia on a plane ride from Orange County to Salt Lake City. I instantly knew he was good guy because he was wearing a Dodgers jersey and a Lakers hat. After a short conversation with Pete I was shocked at what I heard. It turns out Pete had moved his family to Montana after losing a business. His twenty-four year old son David and David’s fiancé had recently been killed in a car accident. The following week Pete was diagnosed with Color cancer and underwent twelve months of radiation treatment.

Pete’s son David and his fiancé Shayla were killed in a late night car accident in July of 2010. There were no alcohol or drugs involved in the accident whatsoever. According to the local authorities the car went off the road sometime past midnight most likely due to an animal or distracted driver that swerved into their lane. They were been engaged to be married later that year.

David met Shayla when they were in their mid-teens. A short six months after they met Shayla found out she had leukemia and began treatment immediately. Even thought they were only kids, David stood by Shayla’s side every step of the way. He worked nights in order to travel to Oregon where Shayla was undergoing treatment. He spent holidays and weekends by her side. He understood the principle of commitment and never gave up on her. She recovered after four years of medical treatment.

David was also a great success in sports. He wrestled competitively in college and was nationally ranked. He gained a reputation for being the guy who protected everyone in his town, especially when out of towners would frequent the local bar. They knew they couldn’t cause trouble or “Poody” (as he was known) would escort them off the premises by force if necessary. David was 6” 4 and 250 lbs. He is survived by his two brothers Peter and Ryan.

Despite all of this, Pete is still a positive fun-loving talkative Christian. He told me how God had gotten him through all of these trials and how he his faith had actually grown because of them. Toward the end he mentioned that they were not able to purchase a head stone for his son yet due to the financial strain they were under and the cancer treatments. They didn’t want anything grand, just something small and appropriate for this much deserving young man. I made a decision right then and there that I would get him the money.

So I’ve created this Crowdrise campaign to raise the money for Pete and Claudia Ampudia. Anything you or anyone you know can contribute would be cherished. I’m trying to raise the money by Thanksgiving. You can see pictures of David and Shayla on Pete’s facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Pete.n.Claudia.Ampudia. If you choose to comment, please don’t mention anything about the campaign. I would like to keep this anonymous. Please keep Pete and his family in your prayers. They could use all the help they can get.

Sincerely,
Anonymous
