I am discussing with the NGO on what to do with the surplus and it will likely be directed to getting parts for an ultrasound unit going to Ecuador ( where i will doing a mission stop as well prior to Bolivia), so please do continue to donate if you believe in this meaningful cause. cheers!
Hi everyone! I am an obstetrician and gynaecologist working in Singapore trying to raise funds for a portable ultrasound machine for MMI (Medical Ministry International) Bolivia. I will be doing a medical mission trip in July/ Aug 2014 and training the health care staff on the usage of ultrasound in obgyn related conditions. MMI (http://www.medicalministrytrips.org/what-we-do/) conducts medical missions all over Bolivia and are aided by 2 local physicians who travel with them. MMI seeks to establish medical platforms for service and education that build medical capacity for those that need it most. They have staff on the ground work side by side with the community and provide care and help train the people in the community to build their ability to help themselves.
MMI Bolivia have been looking for a portable ultrasound machine for 5 years now. Ultrasound is the basic pillar and cornerstone in OBGYN diagnosis. It provides the best imaging modality, is safe for the fetus with quick on the spot diagnosis applicable for diagnosing a myriad of OBGYN conditions including conditions like life threatening ectopic pregnancies, ovarian cyst accidents, fibroids, cancers, polyps, pelvic abscesses and extensive use in obstetrics for dating pregnancies, diagnosing twins, checking viability, growth and ruling out placental and fetal abnormalities etc.
Having a portable ultrasound machine enables :
Accuracy of diagnosis= better, appropriate and timely management
Bringing healthcare to the people ( use in mobile clinics and camps for areas which are hard to access)
The use of ultrasound is also relevant in other specialities like urology, hepatobiliary and cardiology, and plans are being made to expand the teaching of ultrasound imaging in these areas.
I never fail to count my blessings that i was born and live in a place with modern medical facilities and equipment. Yet, every day I go to work and often take for granted the availability of all the resources at my disposal. I wonder how much use I would be to my patients if all that investigative equipment that aid in diagnosis, surgical tools that are necessary in my operations and medications that enable a cure were no longer there. The disparity in the allocation of these resources are probably part of the reason that the maternal mortality rate in Bolivia is about 200/ 100,000 while it is 4-6/100,000 in Singapore.
So I would be really grateful if you opened your purse strings and give generously to this cause. It s an ultra SOUND cause ! :P haha
