Welcome to the Michigan Thumb, the eastern shore of Lower Michigan and the west shore of Lake Huron. This jewel, less than a two hour drive from several of Michigan’s main Metropolitan areas – Detroit, Saginaw, Midland, Bay City, Flint and Lansing, offers over 80 miles of breathtaking Lake Huron shoreline. We will paddle in clean, clear and sometimes even calm water ,and explore isolated beaches.
Starting on Port Crescent Beach, we will cruise NE to the tip of the thumb, paddle by the famous Turnip Rock, the Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse and resort, and then turn South towards Port Hope, Harbor Beach, Port Sanilac and end up in Lexington one week later.
The Sanilac County Underwater Preserve, compromised of 163 square miles of protected lake bottom containing numerous shipwrecks dating back as far as 1864, will make this an unforgettable experience for all. This group will enjoy a private tour of the Harbor Beach Lighthouse conducted by the lighthouse keeper, certainly making this a once in a life time experience as well. Distances between landings can be as little as a mile or less, offering the opportunity to stroll through resort villages which offer unique shopping, dining, cultural and entertainment experiences.
We have chosen Lexington as our Head Quarter for the week. This charming town offers lake front cottages, B&Bs, campgrounds and a lovely city center to convene after a day of paddle.
