POTS Service Dog for Malia
Organized by: Malia Myers
My name's Malia and I suffer from an illness called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. It's an invisible chronic illness so I seem normal, but struggle to make it through daily life. My blood pressure is low and I have an intolerance to changing posture without becoming dizzy or passing out. POTS service dogs can alert when their owner may pass out, so I can sit down in advance to avoid injury; they can crawl under my legs when I pass out to increase blood flow to my brain; or the can help me keep my balance while ascending stairs. Even bending over things up off the ground or standing up to turn off a light can cause me severe dizziness, so that's something a dog could help me with. My mom is a big help with my condition, and I couldn't make it without her, but I'll be going to college soon, and a service dog would allow me to gain back some of the independence I yearn for. Thank you for your support!
