THE STORY:

This unique memorial endowment fund is created in tribute to my late parents - Mr. Yui-Wa Lau and Mrs. Po-Siu Ho - as a way to share their love and hope with others.

It's never too early to give. No matter how big or small your gift is, you can make a difference.

To honor their love for life and passion for serving others, the Po Wa Opportunity Scholarship Endowment Fund for International Students was established to provide scholarships to international students attending the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) who have demonstrated their commitment to academic excellence and to making a difference in people’s lives. We hope to help other international students to achieve their educational goals.

I came to UNI as an international student in 1997, the year after my father died of cancer, leaving my mother to be the sole supporter for my family. I hardly knew any English, had no money and brought just two suitcases of clothes with me. As the first member of my family to attend college, I didn't have great wealth or privilege to my name. Graduating from UNI is one of the great achievements of my life—but I didn't accomplish it on my own.

My education would not have been possible without the commitment of loyal donors. Today, serving as the Director of Community Education, Lifelong Learning and International Education the the College of Marin, their support means more to me than ever. My experience at UNI was unique and amazing. But there are plenty of success stories like mine—and they all begin with the generosity of UNI supporters.

I am so thankful for the resources that allowed me to attend UNI. And a few years ago, I was inspired to pay it forward.

In 2010, I donated US$30,000 to the UNI Foundation established the Po Wa Opportunity Scholarship Endowment Fund, in honor of my late parents. Thanks to this scholarship fund, each year an international student will receive a US$1,000 scholarship at the University of Northern Iowa to help achieve his/her educational goal.

It's never too early to give. No matter how big or small your gift is, you can make a difference.

There are hundreds—even thousands—of students out there who are in need of support. Now, it's your turn to give back and make a difference. Will you join me today in standing behind current and future UNI students by making a gift to the Po Wa Opportunity Scholarship Endowment Fund? Together, we can change lives.

Proud to be purple,
